Tooth-colored fillings

A tooth-colored filling repairs a damaged tooth with composite that matches the color of the tooth.

What is a composite filling?

Composite is a tooth-colored material used to repair cavities and chipped or worn teeth. The doctor removes the damaged part, places the composite in thin layers and hardens each one with a special light.

She matches the shade to your teeth, so the repair is hard to spot when you talk or smile.

When is it recommended?

  • Small or medium cavities.
  • A chipped or broken tooth.
  • Wear near the gumline, which often causes sensitivity.
  • Replacing an old filling that is worn or leaking.

If the damage is very large, a filling may not be enough. The doctor will tell you if a crown is the better option.

What happens at the appointment?

  1. The doctor checks the tooth and takes an X-ray if needed.
  2. If the tooth needs it, she gives you a local anesthetic.
  3. She removes the decay or damaged part and cleans the tooth.
  4. She places the composite in layers and hardens it with light.
  5. She checks your bite, adjusts and polishes.

How long does it take?

A filling is usually done in a single visit. The time depends on its size and how many teeth are treated. The doctor will tell you before she starts.

Does it hurt?

A local anesthetic is used when needed, so most people only feel pressure. The tooth may be a little sensitive to cold for a few days.

After your visit

  • If you had an anesthetic, wait until it wears off before eating so you do not bite your cheek.
  • Keep brushing twice a day and use dental floss.
  • If your bite feels high, send us a message and we will adjust it.
