Dental cleaning

A dental cleaning removes the plaque and tartar that brushing misses. It is for children and adults.

What is a dental cleaning?

It is a professional clean of your teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing remove much of the everyday plaque, but over time it hardens into tartar, which a toothbrush can no longer remove. A cleaning takes off that tartar and built-up plaque, especially along the gumline and between teeth.

It is also a good moment to look over your mouth calmly and catch cavities, swollen gums or other changes early.

What happens at the appointment?

  1. The doctor asks how you have been feeling and checks your teeth and gums.
  2. She removes plaque and tartar with special instruments, one tooth at a time.
  3. She polishes your teeth so the surface is smooth and easier to keep clean.
  4. She explains what she found and gives you tips for caring for your teeth at home.

Children always get fluoride at the end. Adults get it when they are prone to cavities.

How long does it take?

About an hour. If there is a lot of tartar, it may take a little longer.

Does it hurt?

Most people only feel pressure or scraping. If your teeth or gums are sensitive, tell the doctor before she starts so she can go more gently. It is normal for gums to bleed a little if they were inflamed.

Dental cleaning for children

Children need cleanings too. The doctor sees both children and adults, and explains each step to a child before she does it. The first visit can be from age 3.

A child's cleaning always includes fluoride. To protect the back teeth, the doctor may also suggest sealants: a thin coating over the grooves where cavities tend to start.

After your cleaning

  • You can eat and drink as usual, unless the doctor tells you otherwise.
  • If your teeth feel a little sensitive, this usually passes within a few days.
  • Keep brushing twice a day and use dental floss.

How often should I get one?

Every 6 months. If your gums need it, the doctor will tell you whether to come back sooner.

Approximate prices

The doctor's fees follow the minimum fee schedule of the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Costa Rica, the national dental board (published January 2025). These are the minimum fees for a cleaning, in US dollars:

Cleanings

Cleaning with fluoride, no scaling (usual for children)
$82
Cleaning with fluoride and scaling (usual for adults)
$111

Every first visit includes a general oral exam and X-rays. From there, we prepare a treatment plan and a quote.

Dollar amounts are converted at ₡450 per US dollar. The official fees are in Costa Rican colones, so the amount in dollars can change slightly with the exchange rate. The final price depends on your case, and the doctor confirms it after examining you. You can pay in cash, by card or with SINPE Móvil.
